The License to Carry a Handgun service allows you to apply, renew, or check the status of a handgun license or instructor certification online with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Before you begin, please read the Texas Handgun Licensing Laws and Selected Statutes. For detailed eligibility requirements, please refer to Texas GC §411.172.
ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Please review all requirements before submitting your application.
Have the following ready before you begin your online application.
Valid Driver License or Identification Card
Your current Texas DL or state-issued ID card.
Current Demographic & Contact Information
Up-to-date name, address, phone number, and employment information.
Residential & Employment History
Information for the last five years is required for new applicants.
Psychiatric, Drug, Alcohol & Criminal History
You will be asked to disclose any relevant history as part of the application.
Valid Email Address
Required for application correspondence and status updates from DPS.
Valid Credit Card
Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. All fees are non-refundable.
